A few weeks ago, I took a trip out to the wineries on the North Fork of Long Island for the day with my parents and sister. At this point, there's nothing Mom really needs for her birthday--but everyone wants a solid day of food, laughs and wine. Fall is the perfect time to make the trip out and after a few attempts, we finally wound up at Raphael Vineyards. Now there was some cliche winery decor (note the faux grape vines above) but the owners also managed to creatively mix materials to create a cozy, welcoming (and still suitable for the amount of traffic it has to handle) space. They effectively combined wood, wrought iron, stained glass (on sconces not pictured--because you can't really take pictures in the restroom) and candles. At least the look of candles--no need to create a fire hazard and violate building code. All things that you could do in your own home. Notice that the large chandeliers are appropriate for the lofted ceilings. Proportion is so important and the lighting matches well with the wood beams and columns. So keep your eyes open for good design ideas--you'd be surprised where you can find them.
