This question came in from a reader the other day. It's about dormered ceilings in bedrooms and how to design around them. Having grown up in a room with dormered ceilings, I could definitely relate to the question.
I have a quick design question for you, from my friend at work. Her son’s bedroom has slanted walls. They go straight up vertically for about 4 feet, and then they angle toward a peak at the ceiling. She’s basically left these walls bare, since it’s hard to hang anything on the angled portions, but she’d really like to try to do something more interesting with those walls. Her son is a big sports fan, so I suggested maybe putting up a Fathead or something, but I thought you might have some more interesting ideas.

Wall decals (like the aforementioned Fatheads) are a good option because they add color and interest but are easy to change when his tastes change. Doing something organic, with movement, like a tree could be interesting since it can work with the angles instead of against it. But it would be easy enough to do something more graphic, too. For instance, paint the walls a brighter green or blue and then use the white decals in squares or circles to create a bit more of a "mod" look. Another, totally different direction, would be to do a treatment with paint. Basically, the same idea as the decals but done with paint instead--geometric shapes work best with this.
Here's the thing, the angled walls should be addressed, but it's a better idea to focus on some of the more positive things in the room. Paint the walls an interesting color (I can offer suggestions if needed) and then create interest with an area rug, bedding, etc. Let the walls be a more simple backdrop.
