So do remember, friends, please use only unscented candles and flowers in your dining area while you eat. Gardenias look and smell gorgeous. I don't imagine they taste very good.
Nutmeg is "spice non grata" in my household. Anytime I add nutmeg into things-pie, pancakes, a bechamel sauce, I get a sad face. The reason, scented candles. One holiday potpourri has made nutmeg the most hated of spices. I'm just glad cinnamon came out unscathed.
So do remember, friends, please use only unscented candles and flowers in your dining area while you eat. Gardenias look and smell gorgeous. I don't imagine they taste very good.

A few weeks ago I made it over to the Griffith Observatory for a few hours of hiking and exploring. It's a beautiful building that's free to the public--entry, parking, the whole bit. Got to love a deal, right? Pillows are one of the easiest ways to update your home. Custom pillows can run into the hundreds of dollars (that Greek key trim can add up, folks) but they can absolutely make the room. For spaces where you're not prepared to make such an investment, like a child's room or a rental property, I found some great deals on pillow covers on, of all places, amazon.com After the game in San Diego on Saturday, I went to Coronado Island for the afternoon for lunch and a visit to the beach. No trip to Coronado Island is complete without a visit to the Hotel del Coronado. The hotel opened in 1888 and is one of the oldest Victorian structures still in existence. Unlike most Victorians, the hotel's facade is a clean, crisp white. Perfect for a beach side resort, but it means you have to look closer to appreciate all the detail One question I get asked frequently is how to make children's rooms age gracefully. They're kids, so tastes can change pretty quickly and today's favorite is tomorrow's "ugh, gross". One way to avoid such pitfalls is to make the investment pieces neutral and add the drama with accessories.
I received an email from a family who just purchased a new apartment and were looking to redo their living room and dining nook. The living area is a generous size, but the dining area is on the smaller side. The goal was to create a warm, cozy, but most importantly livable space the entire family could enjoy.
I've had my eye on this rug for ages, but unfortunately there's no room for it in my current home. So, I did the next best thing and used it for a client project. Check back in on Monday for the full design plan for a living room and dining nook redesign. My clients are a young family who have just moved into a new apartment and are looking to create a cozy home that won't forfeit style for livability. Can I do it? Check back and see. And if you need design consultation services, send me an email and together we'll give you a beautiful place to come home to. One of the best parts about taking the dog out for his nightly walk is getting to spy, ahem, observe, my neighbors. I'm in West Hollywood and there's some great ideas on display. For instance, notice the simple privacy treatment on the window pictured left. Sorry for the quality, but when there's an 80 lb lab pulling at you, it's tough to get a great shot. This midcentury style apartment frosted the bottom third of the window to provide some privacy while leaving the top two thirds open. You can purchase frosted contact paper in different sizes, so just choose the right length and apply. It's fast, effective and appropriate to the style of the home. A quick word on recliners. Recliners are awesome. They're no longer the eyesores of the past with big poufy arms and large handles built into the site. Fear not, for if that is your jam, those versions are still available at many discount furniture stores.
